More Americans last week applied for jobless benefits than the week before.

The number rose by 16,000 claims to 744,000 claims, meaning businesses are still cutting jobs.

Labor expert and former state employment chief Michael Bernick tells KNX 1070 News nearly 20 percent of the country's claims come from California.

"Over 75 percent of the new claims are what are known as additional claims. That means they are from people who have been unemployed, been called back to work and then been unemployed again," he says.

He says this shows a high degree of volatility.

Bernick says employment should start to stabilize coming up, especially with the state planning to return to near-normal in mid-June.

According to Forbes, the Labor Department calculated last week that the US economy added 916,000 jobs in March - about 300,000 more jobs than were expected by experts.
