CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- This latest blast of heavy snow and severe cold is hard on humans, and especially hard on pets.

A local veterinarian has some suggestions on how you can keep your pets safe during their brief, but necessary trips outside.

Dr. David Gonsky of West Loop Veterinary Care in Chicago said walks should be short and pets should be protected from the elements to prevent hypothermia and frostbite.

"Booties can help protect the feet from salt. If you pet doesn't wear booties, go ahead and wipe them with a wet cloth when they come in," he said.

Dr. Gonsky said frostbite and hypothermia can set in quickly.

"We do see sometimes frostbite, and that's because it gets the nose, ears, and the tip of the tails," Dr. Gonsky said.

He recommends inside activities for your pets so they can burn off energy.

"Play games and think of things that you could do inside, much like we have all had to adjust during the pandemic ourselves," Dr. Gonsky said.
