The bodies of the unidentified victims, who were 17 and 22 years old, were recovered from Mine Hill Beach at Sunset Lake in Mine Hill after an intensive search, according to the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office.

Morris County EMS first got word of the drownings just before 5:30 p.m., when a group in the beach parking lot told them two people went into the water at the sand pits and never came out.

Police, fire and EMS were notified, and more than a dozen agencies responded to the lake, focusing on an area where the young men were last seen.

Officials said divers entered the water but that the search was complicated by “tangled vegetation below the water surface.”

Hours after the search began, both bodies were recovered, officials said.

The identities of the victims are being withheld pending the notification of their families.
