Robert Schuster, 53, of Bedford, was sentenced to two to six years in state prison in connection with the December 2019 crash. He pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular manslaughter in August.

According to Westchester County District Attorney Miriam Rocah, the crash happened on Dec. 16, 2019, as Schuster was driving drunk on Route 172 in Bedford after leaving a holiday party.

Rocah said Schuster was traveling at 94 mph when he crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic near Darlington Road, and crashed into a vehicle driven by 22-year-old Diego Trejo.

Trejo was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, while Schuster was transported to a nearby hospital.

“This senseless tragedy caused by a former attorney with a prior conviction for drunk driving who once again chose to disregard the law and drive while drunk cut short the life of a 22-year-old young man,” DA Rocah said.

Trejo’s family, on a GoFundMe page, revealed that he had been traveling home with his dog, Lily, who also died in the crash.

“Whenever you saw Diego, he always said hello with a big smile.  He was a gentle soul and loved to have a good time and was just starting to live his life. He was truly free spirited and full of happiness,” the family wrote on the fundraiser page.
