The house exploded just seconds after five emergency responders entered the building, authorities said.
A police sergeant spotted the fire while on patrol just after 2 a.m. and all of Pompton Lakes’ volunteer firefighters were called to the scene.
Two firefighters were hospitalized at St. Barnabas Burn Center after the explosion, where they were treated and released.

The other three injured rescue workers were treated for minor injuries at the scene.
“Everyday our volunteer organizations put their life on the line for Pompton Lakes,” said Pompton Lakes mayor Michael Serra in a Facebook post. “We all appreciate it.”
