The break happened at Clifton and Mill streets in Belleville and is impacting four of the city’s five wards—the North, West, South and Central—Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé announced.
Video shows large amounts of water bubbling up from the ground near the scene of the break.
It comes as Tuesday's high in Newark is forecast to be 97 degrees, with RealFeel temps nearing 105, according to AccuWeather.

City residents are advised to boil water until further notice, while the city will go door-to-door handing out water. The emergency has also led to the cancellation of summer school programs.
The city warned some people would experience having no water or low pressure. The Department of Water and Sewer Utilities is working to repair the break.
