FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A Long Island man is facing charges, including animal cruelty, after burglarizing a home and releasing the homeowner's dogs, one of which killed a pet cat, police said Tuesday.
Nassau County police said a pet care agent arrived at the Farmingdale home on Terrace View Road at 1:30 p.m. to find a rear door broken and that two dogs and three cats had been released from their crates.
The agent contacted the 57-year-old homeowner, who checked her home's security footage and noticed that a man had entered the house but did not exit.
Responding officers located Isaac Flores, 29, inside the home and arrested him without incident, police said.
Police said Flores caused $400 worth of damage to a door, "ransacked" the home and stole items, including a laptop worth $2,500. Flores then released the dogs and cats from their crates, and one of the dogs killed one of the cats.
Investigators said Flores was also caught on security footage at 8:46 a.m. that morning using a pry bar on the front and rear storm doors in an attempt to gain entry into another home on Terrace View Road. Damage to that home was valued around $300, police said.
Flores was charged with second-degree burglary, two counts of third-degree criminal mischief, second-degree attempted burglary, two counts of possession of burglar's tools, fourth-degree grand larceny and an agriculture and markets law charge of aggravated cruelty to animals.
