NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 15-year-old boy was arrested on attempted murder and other charges late Wednesday after the 17-year-old son of an NYPD officer was shot in the arm near his high school in Queens earlier in the day, police said Thursday.

The unidentified 15-year-old suspect was apprehended by detectives at his home in Queens on Wednesday night.

The teen was charged with attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment.

Two other 15-year-olds boys were taken into custody for questioning, but they were later released.

Police believe a teen who the victim was walking with was the intended target.

The victim was shot at 74th Street and Grand Avenue, just up the block from Maspeth High School, at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to police.

The wounded teen then ran into the school looking for help, officials said. Police were called and the school was briefly put on lockdown.

On Wednesday, a friend of the victim, Isaiah Perez, told 1010 WINS that he had stayed late at school but the victim left early and was headed to a local gym when he was shot in the arm.

"In the beginning, I heard they were having arguments ... but I didn't think anything like this would ever escalate because, you know, overtime you think people would just forget," Perez said.

Perez's mother, Suki Velez, said Maspeth used to be very safe.

"I don't know if it's the pandemic or whatever happened but I feel like the violence is just getting out of control," she added. "It's just really crazy."
