The partial floor collapse happened around 9 a.m. Sunday at a six-story building on Shakespeare Avenue, near Anderson Avenue, in the Highbridge section.

When the 28-year-old tenant entered her first-floor bathroom, the floor gave way in the area of the toilet and shower, sending her tumbling down into the cellar, officials said.

The woman fell about 8 feet and suffered minor injuries, including cuts and bruises. She was recovering at a hospital.

The collapse left a 2 feet by 4 feet hole in the bathroom floor.

The Department of Buildings sent inspectors to the building, where they confirmed that a section of the first floor bathroom had collapsed into the cellar.

A preliminary investigation by the DOB determined that a lack of proper maintenance was a contributing factor to the collapse.

The DOB issued a violation to the landlord for failure to properly maintain the building.

The department also ordered the landlord to immediately contract the services of a professional engineer and submit an engineering report on the structural stability of the floor inside the rest of the apartment.

In the meantime, the woman, her husband and child were forced out of the apartment after the DOB issued a partial vacate order for the impacted unit, as well as for the area directly below it.

Tenants told WABC that they weren’t surprised, and that the landlord ignores issues in the building.

“I see the water’s coming down, and I don’t want to be the next one with a bathtub on my head,” one man said.
