NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A residential fire in Brooklyn on Monday morning injured 17 people, including a resident who was critically injured, officials said after fires killed multiple people, including a boy, in the city over the weekend.
The Williamsburg fire broke out just after 6:30 a.m. on the fourth floor of a four-story mixed-use building at Penn Street and Harrison Avenue, according to the FDNY.
The fire quickly escalated to a second-alarm fire, with 25 units and more than 100 FDNY members responding to the scene, officials said.
Some people had to be rescued by tower ladder during a frantic scene, with heavy fire on the first floor and extending to the second floor. The building includes a supermarket on the first floor and apartments above the business.
One person was transported to Brooklyn Hospital Center in critical condition.
Three people who suffered minor injuries were transported to NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn.
Thirteen more people had non-life-threatening injuries and were treated at the scene by EMS, the FDNY said.
The fire was brought under control just before 7:45 a.m. The cause is under investigation.
The fire came hours after firefighters battled a four-alarm inferno that spread to all three floors of a business at E. 124th Street and Third Avenue in East Harlem early Monday morning.
The 12:30 a.m. fire injured four firefighters and one civilian who is believed to be a worker who was inside the building.
They were all treated for minor injuries.
It appears that the nonprofit Exodus Transitional Community operates out of the building.
Monday’s fires followed a residential fire Sunday morning in East Flatbush that killed a 13-year-old boy and injured two others in East Flatbush.
The deadly fire at E. 35th Street and Snyder Avenue erupted around 10:30 a.m. at a seven-story residential building.
Dillon Waldren-Dickson, 13, was pronounced dead at NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County.
A 50-year-old woman and 21-year-old man were taken to the same hospital in stable condition.
The FDNY fire marshal is investigating the cause.
Another deadly fire in East Elmhurst on Friday night took over 100 firefighters to extinguish.
A man was pronounced dead at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst after suffering smoke inhalation on the second floor of a three-story dwelling at 89th Street and Astoria Boulevard. Three other residents suffered minor injuries.
The fire marshal determined that a lithium-ion battery caused that fire. The batteries, which are used in e-bikes and e-scooters, have been blamed for a growing number of fires in the city.
