NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A Queens grand jury indicted an 18-year-old Levittown man for a hit-and-run crash that left a 16-year-old bicyclist dead in April, according to the Queens District Attorney’s Office.

On April 10, Yaser Ibrahim allegedly hit and killed Jaydan McLaurin while speeding through a red light and driving with only a learner’s permit.

Ibrahim admitted he was driving about double the speed limit in a 2022 BMW X7 when he hit Jaydan McLaurin, who was riding an electric Citi Bike through the intersection of 21st Street and 21st Avenue in Astoria, according to prosecutors.

McLaurin was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead from severe head and body trauma.

Police allegedly found the BMW abandoned with damage to the bumper and windshield a few blocks away.

When police arrested Ibrahim, they found he only had a learner’s permit, not a driver’s license.

“The rules of the road and licensing requirements exist to prevent tragedies like this one,” said Queens DA Melinda Katz. “We will hold the defendant accountable and seek justice for the young victim and his loved ones.”

A grand jury indicted the teenager on charges of manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, leaving the scene of an incident, failing to stop at a red light and related offenses.

If convicted, Ibrahim faces between five and 15 years in prison.
