NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — An 18-year-old Levittown man was charged for leaving the scene of an accident after hitting and killing a 16-year-old bicyclist with his car in Queens Monday, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced Wednesday.

Yaser Ibrahim was allegedly speeding in a 2022 BMW X7 with only his learner’s permit around 9:45 p.m. when he crashed into Jaydan McLaurin, a 16-year-old boy riding an electric Citi Bike through the intersection of 21st Street and 21st Avenue in Astoria.

Emergency responders rushed McLaurin to a nearby hospital with severe head and body trauma, where he was pronounced dead.

Police found the BMW a few blocks away with a damaged bumper and windshield.

Ibrahim later admitted to police he was driving the car at about 45 to 50 miles per hour, according to Katz. The speed limit on that road is 25 miles per hour. The defendant allegedly said he got scared and fled after he hit the bicyclist.

“The rules of the road like speed limits and licensing requirements exist to prevent tragedies like this one,” said Katz. “We will seek justice for the young victim and his loved ones.”

Ibrahim was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal incident without reporting, a speeding violation, having tinted windows, driving without insurance and driving without a license.
