NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A 55-year-old man died this week after he was sucker-punched and beaten in a mugging outside a Brooklyn deli, according to police and his family.

John Sarquiz died at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn on Monday, five days after last Wednesday's robbery in Dyker Heights.

Sarquiz was attacked in front of a deli at 73rd Street and 13th Avenue, about a block from his home on 74th Street.

NYPD officers responding to a 911 call just before 8 p.m. found him lying in front of the deli unresponsive with head trauma, police said.

He was rushed to the hospital but did not survive his injuries.

Investigators believe Sarquiz was standing outside the deli when a man punched him from behind. He was knocked to the ground and hit his head.

The attacker continued to kick him as he was on the ground before stealing his money and jewelry, his grieving sister Christina Sarquiz told the New York Post.

Sarquiz said her brother took care of their mother ever since their father died in 2014. " We’re completely devastated," Sarquiz said of her mom and two sisters.

Police haven't yet released images of a suspect in the case. Sarquiz said she heard he's " known in the neighborhood" and "has been in and out of prison."

The NYPD said Wednesday that the case has been deemed a homicide. An investigation is ongoing.
