NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A man bashed a bottle over the head of an NYPD officer as she stood in uniform on a Bronx street Monday afternoon, police said Tuesday.

The brazen sneak attack unfolded at W. 231st Street and Broadway in Kingsbridge, where the officer was standing outside a smoke shop during a sheriff inspection just after 1:40 p.m.

Shocking video shows the moment the man casually walks up behind the cop and smacks her head with the bottle. He continues to go after her even as other officers move to apprehend him, video shows.

A second video appears to show the bottle shattering as it falls to the pavement.

The alleged attacker, identified by police as 45-year-old Jose Garcia, of the Bronx, was taken into custody at the scene.

He was charged with assault, obstructing governmental administration, menacing, resisting arrest, possession of a criminal weapon and harassment.

The officer was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital, where she was treated and released.
