NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- The NYPD charged a Staten Island man Monday with attempted murder of a police officer after he allegedly pointed a gun at cops Sunday, causing one officer to open fire.

In addition to the attempted murder charge, Raymond Jackson, 29, faces charges of possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment and menacing.

Two officers were on foot patrol at the corner of Park Hill and Sobel Court in the Clifton neighborhood around 3:50 p.m. Sunday when they heard shots fired around the corner at Bowen Street and Sobel Court, police said.

The officers responded and encountered a man with a firearm. The cops yelled at him to drop the weapon, but instead he pointed it at them, according to police.

One of the officers fired in the direction of the suspect, who fled on foot, police said.

Jackson was apprehended a couple of blocks away on Hamilton Street, near Vanderbilt Avenue, according to police.

No injuries were reported following the encounter.
