NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A spat over a sandwich spiraled out of control at a Washington Heights deli this week, leading to the assault of a worker and the stabbing of a customer, police said Friday as they released images of a suspect who's still on the loose.

The chaos unfolded shortly before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at 1408 Gourmet Deli on St. Nicholas Avenue, near W. 181st Street.

A customer, identified by police as Edwin Rodriguez, 28, got into an argument with an 18-year-old deli worker, reportedly over a sandwich.

During the quarrel, Rodriguez hurled a card reader at the employee and struck him in the head, police said.

Workers were unable to get Rodriguez to leave, and he eventually got into a dispute with another customer, who whipped out a knife and stabbed Rodriguez multiple times, police said.

The customer with the knife fled the business, while Rodriguez was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem in stable condition.

Rodriguez was charged with assault for the attack on the deli worker.

The worker suffered a minor head injury from the card reader. He refused medical attention at the scene.

The knife-wielding customer remained at large Friday. Images show him swinging a blade at the deli.
