NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – The MTA launched a “Subway Bingo” game for straphangers to play while riding the rails, but some criticized the game, with one man saying it bordered on “insulting.”
To play, riders can print a copy of the Bingo card on the MTA website, or download the card to their phone. Physical copies are also available for free at the New York Transit Museum in Brooklyn and its two shops in Manhattan.
Then it’s just a matter of finding the things in the Bingo spaces. There are common objects and sightings like MetroCard machines, subway maps and “backpacks on laps.” There are also a few rarer ones, including “plant transports” and “balloons.”
Once a player has spotted enough to complete a Bingo line, they can upload photos of the sightings in one Instagram post and tag @MTAaway to enter a sweepstakes.
Among the prizes up for grabs are OMNY fares, New York Transit Museum memberships and framed limited edition printed Subway Bingo cards.
The Bingo card is a "celebration" of New York's storied transit system, which turned 118 years old last week, the MTA said.
However, at the Houston Street station in Hudson Square on Wednesday, riders said they were more focused on issues like subway crime and cleanliness than on playing Bingo.
“Cleaning the platforms, cleaning the rats out of the tracks,” one woman said.
“We still have to pay $3 to get into a subway that’s not clean, not safe,” another woman said.
Another rider, Buddy, felt the game verged on offensive given the concerns on riders' minds: “This seems pretty ridiculous, in a nutshell,” he said before pausing. “Maybe even insulting.”
