NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The NYPD is sending members of its force to Washington, D.C. next week to help with inauguration-related security, Commissioner Dermot Shea said Monday.

D.C. officials asked the NYPD to send officers down for the 59th presidential inauguration — which is set to take place on Wednesday, Jan. 20 — several months ago, Shea said in an interview with NY1 Monday morning.

“NYPD will happily send members of the force to Washington to stand with, not just law enforcement, [but] with all elected officials, and people celebrating the transfer of power in this country,” he said. “And it should be, hopefully, a peaceful day that we can look back on one day, and hopefully learn from."

Law enforcement sources told the New York Post the department plans to send around 200 members to D.C.

In the interview, Shea said he was “disgusted” by Trump supporters who stormed the Capitol building last week.

“I think it’s more important than ever to show the solidarity with law enforcement, with the country as a whole,” he said. “What that building stands for, what our freedom stands for, it’s something that we should never take for granted.”

“Hopefully we never see anything like that again,” he added.
