The incident occurred on Steinway Street near 34th Avenue in Astoria where the 39-year-old officer was approached by three men demanding his property after leaving a nightclub en route to his car, authorities said.
The trio stole a gold chain from the victim’s neck before shooting him in the leg and then fleeing in a black Nissan Altima, according to police.
EMS workers transported the officer to Elmhurst Hospital, where he’s in stable condition.
“This heinous unprovoked attack is a stark reminder that violent crime doesn’t discriminate and law enforcement officers continue to be victims of violent crimes in our streets,” said city Correction Officer Union President Benny Boscio.
Anyone with information is asked to call 1-800-577-TIPS.
