NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Police opened fire as two gunpoint robbery suspects fled a traffic stop in Manhattan’s Flatiron District on Monday morning.

A flood of police closed off Fifth Avenue at 28th Street as the NYPD investigated the shooting, which happened just before 1:30 a.m., when officers tried to pull over a BMW that they’d been watching in connection to high-end jewelry thefts.

When the officers attempted to pull the BMW over, a chase ensued and the vehicle mounted a sidewalk before the suspects ran, police said.

One officer opened fire, but no one was hit, according to police.

One suspect was apprehended at the scene, while the second remained at large. Police said a gun was recovered from the BMW.

Police believe the suspects are connected to a string of gunpoint robberies in which victims are targeted as they leave upscale restaurants and robbed of their jewelry.

In this instance, police believe the suspects were casing the restaurant Pergola, near where two such robberies happened back in August.
