Police were on patrol in the Morrisania section around 8 p.m. when they saw a black Jeep SUV blow through several red lights, NYPD Chief of Department Kenneth Corey said at a press conference.

While the Jeep was stopped at a light at East 165th Street and Boston Road, one unmarked police car with its lights on angled in front of the Jeep, while a second unmarked police car, also with its lights on, came up from behind the SUV, according to police.

“As the officers exited their vehicle, the Jeep backed up and sped directly towards one officer, who discharged his weapon at the vehicle, striking the driver,” Corey said.

Officers rendered life-saving aid to the driver, who was taken to Lincoln Hospital in critical condition.

Two officers were taken to an area hospital for observation.

Three passengers in the Jeep were taken to the 42nd Precinct stationhouse for questioning.

The officers’ body-worn cameras were activated and are being reviewed as the Force Investigation Division investigates the shooting.
