NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A Queens criminal court arraigned a 21-year-old man on Wednesday for beating his 19-year-old cousin with a baseball bat and stabbing her with a knife on Monday, according to Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz.
Witnesses reported hearing Edward Huerta attacking his cousin, who was also his roommate, around 6 p.m. at their apartment in Corona.
He allegedly hit her multiple times with a baseball bat before stabbing her in the face, chest and arms.
Other family members attempted to enter the apartment, but he had barricaded the door, according to prosecutors.
Huerta allegedly fled out a window after the attack.
The victim suffered a fractured skull and bleeding on her brain from the attack.
“At the center of domestic violence prosecutions is the brutality and intimidation batterers use to impose their will on their victims,” said Katz. “We will hold accountable the person who is allegedly responsible for this savage assault that has left a young woman fighting for her life.”
Prosecutors charged Huerta with murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
Faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted and is scheduled to return to court on Jan. 6.
