NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A man being held at Rikers Island hanged himself early Wednesday in a bathroom for Correction Department staff — the 14th detainee to die in DOC custody and the fourth to die by suicide this year.

The unidentified inmate's death at the Eric M. Taylor Center was confirmed by the department on Wednesday, and his cause of death remains pending.
The man took his life after he was jumped by other detainees, sources told the Daily News.
At some point, the detainee became separated from those who jumped him and got into the staff bathroom, the sources said.
"We are very distressed to hear about the death of another person in custody," said DOC Commissioner Louis A. Molina. "Our deepest condolences go out to this individual’s loved ones. We will conduct a preliminary investigation into the circumstances surrounding this death for which we grieve."
The man is the latest detainee to die, also by suicide, after Michael Nieves slit his throat with a razor and died days later on Aug. 30.
Sixteen detainees died in DOC custody last year.
