NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A thief punched and slashed a subway rider while demanding his wallet at a subway station in Chelsea on Sunday, police said.

The NYPD released surveillance video Monday showing the suspect at the station around the time of the attack.

The 42-year-old victim was waiting around 1:20 a.m. on a southbound 1 train platform at the 23rd Street station when his attacker walked up and demanded his wallet.

The assailant punched the victim in the face, causing him to fall to the ground, police said.

He then took out a knife and slashed the victim's hand before fleeing the station empty-handed, according to police.

EMS transported the victim to an area hospital to be treated for his injuries.
