FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A New Jersey man faces an attempted murder charge after he allegedly fired two shots at another car in a wild road rage incident.

Gerald S. Chapman, 39, is also charged with possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose in the May 5 shooting, according to Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald.

The prosecutor said the shooting happened around 4:50 p.m. when Chapman tried to merge in front of another driver as they both drove north on Easton Avenue near the I-287 ramp in Franklin Township.

"According to the victim there was no room for the suspect to merge, at which time the suspect became irate and slapped the passenger side mirror on the victim’s vehicle," McDonald said.

McDonald added that when the driver got out to check for damage, Chapman pulled alongside and fired two shots, striking the vehicle.

Chapman drove away but was eventually identified as the gunman after an investigation by the FBI, prosecutor's office and local police.

The 39-year-old turned himself in to Franklin Township police on Friday. He was held at the Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the prosecutor's office at 908-231-7100 or the Franklin Township Police Department at 732-873-5533.
