WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A 72-year-old former teacher who worked in Westchester, New York and Greenwich, Connecticut was sentenced to 25 years in prison for sexually abusing multiple children and possessing child pornography, the Department of Justice announced on Tuesday.

In 2019, John Mueser coerced a seven-year-old girl he was tutoring in Greenwich into sexual contact with him and used his phone to record the abuse.

Law enforcement started investigating Mueser after his victim’s father learned he had inappropriate photos of her on his cell phone. He was arrested in April 2020.

After his arrest, police found hundreds of sexually explicit images of children.

Officials later discovered two other victims he had sexually abused over the course of decades.

He worked at Riverdale Country School, Camp Riverdale of Education, Sports, and Fun Summer Camp, TCR-on-the-Hudson Day Camp and Christ Church of Riverdale over the course of the 30 years before his arrest, according to the FBI.

He also worked as a private tutor in the Bronx, Westchester and Connecticut.

He pleaded guilty to enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity and possession of child pornography on Jan. 10.

“To the world, John Mueser presented himself as a dedicated teacher. But in reality, Mueser exploited the trust placed in him as an educator in order to gain access to the victim’s home and to carry out his sickening abuse,” said U.S. Attorney Damian Williams. “As today’s sentencing underscores, we will continue to use every tool available to law enforcement to prosecute and punish those who exploit children.”

If he survives his prison sentence, Mueser will be subject to supervised release for the rest of his life.
