CRANBERRY TWP, PA (93.7 The Fan) – A number of goalies went early as free agency opened at noon on Saturday. It started with Antti Raanta and Frederick Anderson with Carolina, Jonathan Quick to the Rangers, Sharks signed MacKenzie Blackwood, Joonas Korpisalo with Ottawa, Kings and Cam Talbot and James Reimer to Detroit. Even the Pens goalie insurance policy, Dustin Tokarski, left to return to Buffalo on a two-way contract.
Fans, likely teammates, wondered what the Pens were going to do with so many options off the board. What they did was stay put. Agreeing to a five-year contract with goalie Tristan Jarry for an average salary of $5.375 million.
Jarry started showing signs with his 31 starts during the 2019-20 season, winning 20 with a .921 save percentage and 2.43 goals against average. He would win 25 of his 38 starts the following year with a 2.75 goals against average but a horrid post-season series had all questioning his ability to win at the right time. The Pens, and new GM Ron Hextall, would stick with him and he rewarded them with a .919 save percentage and 2.42 goals against average in 58 games only to get hurt right before the playoffs. No question if he plays that Rangers series (other than on one leg in Game7), the team advances and then who knows what happens. Jarry won 24 of 47 starts last season with a 2.90 goals against average and .909 save percentage.
The Pens 2013 second-round pick, the British Columbia native recently turned 28 and will be under contract until he reaches his mid-30s.
