A mountain wildfire is wreaking havoc in Western North Carolina. Officials say fire crews are battling a blaze in the Nantahala National Forest in Macon County.
The National Forestry Service says that the Winding Stairs Fire as it's been titled had burned up nearly 100 acres and was 50% contained as of Tuesday.
The fire is said to be nearing homes and the Appalachian Trail. Fire crews are hoping rain throughout the day Wednesday will help slow the blaze down after it broke out on Monday.
The public is being asked to avoid the portion of the national forest off of Highway 64.
