Friday night’s firefighting efforts resulted in a dramatic rescue of a two-man fire crew in Marin County after they became trapped along a ridgeline unable to escape from approaching flames.
Around 8:15 p.m., a call came in to The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office about two Marin County Fire Department firefighters who were battling the Woodward Fire and stuck at Point Reyes National Seashore. When the Sheriff’s helicopter, named “Henry 1,” found them, they were approximately 200 feet from the fire. Strong, gusting winds created by the fire began advancing toward them, but the flight officer was able to use a 100-foot long line to rescue the firefighters and bring them to safety.
A video of the rescue was posted on the Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, at a Saturday briefing, Sonoma County Sheriff Mark Essick said that, “Had it not been for that helicopter there, those firefighters would certainly have perished.”
As of Saturday morning, Marine County Fire reported that the blaze had burned 2,259 acres, with 5% containment. No injuries have been reported and no structures have been damaged.
