Korn frontman Jonathan Davis urged fans experiencing a mental health crisis to seek help during an interview with RADIO.COM for I’m Listening, last year. Davis draws on personal experience when speaking about mental health after the death of his estranged wife in 2018, due to addiction.
“People I know that are really hurting inside usually become an alcoholic or a drug addict, and that’s because they’re trying to hide things that are going on. The best thing that you can do is try to go get some help and go talk to someone,” the singer said. “First, go get help. The thing that happens when you’re depressed or you’re going through mental health issues is you like to try to self-medicate.”
The I’m Listening broadcast returns on Wednesday, September 23. RADIO.COM will join forces with artists like Korn, athletes, and more from across the U.S. to continue the conversation about mental health, with a special two hour broadcast.
Last year, Davis offered practical solutions for people feeling overwhelmed by mental health emergencies. “Getting up and taking walks, exercising. That kind of stuff helps with depression,” he recommends. “There’s a stigma around it, and many people try to hide it, that they’re hurting.”
Other band members have openly discussed their own mental health crises. Guitarist Brian “Head” Welch released a 2018 Showtime documentary Loud Krazy Love, revealing his struggles with addiction and how it affected his entire family’s mental health.
Throughout the week, we'll be sharing moments from past I'm Listening shows here and at ImListening.org, with previous guests like Halsey, Metallica, and Shawn Mendes opening up about mental health. Join us for this year's edition of the show, Wednesday September 23.
