A GoFundMe campaign for an elderly Asian woman who famously fought back during an assault in San Francisco last month has raised $1 million and counting.
Xiao Zhen Xie, 75, gained international attention after the grandmother used a wooden board to defend herself from a man who assaulted her in broad daylight along Market St. on March 17. San Francisco Police said the same man, 39-year-old Steven Jenkins, also attacked 83-year-old Ngoc Pham just moments before assaulting Xie.
Jenkins was arrested at the scene. He was treated at a local hospital.
In the days following news of Xie’s attack, the online fundraiser quickly generated attention and dollars, incredibly passing the $1 million mark on Monday. Xie plans to donate all of the campaign's funds back to the Asian American community, saying "we must not submit to racism and we must fight to the death if necessary."
Her family is working with social workers, lawyers and a CPA to help set up a not-for-profit foundation to help the Asian American community.
They told KPIX-5 she's recovering from her injuries and won't need surgery.
