Xiao Zhen Xie is a 75-year-old grandmother who was assaulted in broad daylight last week on Market Street in San Francisco. Xie was able to fight off the suspect, 39-year old Stephen Jenkins, sending the man to the hospital in a stretcher.
A GoFundMe set up for Xie's recovery set a goal for $50k and quickly became the most popular fundraiser on the site.
It has raised nearly $900k in less than five days and she has now instructed her grandson to make sure that all the money raised is donated back to the Asian American community to help combat racism and to help the AAPI community recover from a series of violent attacks.
She also told her grandson that "we must not submit to racism and we must fight to the death if necessary."
The family has not yet decided where the donations will go.
