An investigation is ongoing after human skeletal remains were discovered near a trail outside Fairfax, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday.
A hiker found the unidentified remains Sunday near Fairfax-Bolinas Rd. in the creek bed near Alpine Dam. The investigation includes a forensic post-mortem exam scheduled for later this week.
The cause of death is pending. It's not clear if the deceased was male or female.
The coroner’s office is working to develop a DNA profile for the National DNA Index System (NDIS) as part of the Combined DNA Index System.
Several agencies are assisting in the investigation.
