The story of West Virginia’s COVID vaccine distribution success has garnered national attention.
Retired Major General James Hoyer, the Adjutant General of the West Virginia National Guard told KDKA Radio's Rick Dayton he drew upon years of military experience to approach the task of distributing the vaccine to West Virginians.
"It's a logistics operation, no different than a logistics operation for the miiitary overseas,” he said.
Hoyer said the state took a whole-of-government approach to the plan, drawing upon all of the key players early to get involved to distribute the vaccines.
"Emergency managers, local health departments, hospital clinics, the federally qualified health clinics, all the players across the spectrum – volunteer organizations active in disasters – all those folks have come together as one entity and that’s what’s given us the focus."
Hoyer said 99.6% of the allotted first-dose vaccines they received from the government were administered last week, and they expect the number to reach 100% this week.
