Should you be required to use an app or a passport card to prove you've been vaccinated against COVID-19? It's a controversial idea being considered in many states, including Pennsylvania.

A vaccine passport - basically an app with a code - could make it easier to determine who's at low risk for things like travel, cruising, and visiting amusement parks, theaters, or sporting events.

But critics say they're intrusive and infringe on personal freedoms. Republican senators in Pennsylvania are drawing up legislation to ban them.

Meanwhile, New York has just become the first state to approve them. They're working with a private tech company to create the app with a code that would allow people to travel more freely and attend crowded events. But they haven't released details about how the app will access health records or protect personal information.

They further argue that vaccine passports would be a waster of taxpayer money and put personal health information at risk for hacking.

In some other states, GOP lawmakers are considering bills that would make it illegal to discriminate based on vaccine status.

One thing is clear - many states will be watching closely to see how it works and residents' reaction.
