WHITTIER, Calif. (KNX) — Two car theft suspects were wounded in a deputy-involved shooting when they allegedly rammed a patrol car while trying to evade arrest Wednesday afternoon in an unincorporated area of Los Angeles County near Whittier.

Deputies from the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department Norwalk Station attempted to speak with the occupants of a blue sedan that was parked in the driveway of a home in the 11400 block of Chere Drive at 2:37 p.m. Authorities said they believed an auto theft suspect was inside the car.

As deputies approached the car, the driver drove backward toward the deputies, prompting them to fire their weapons, according to Deputy Miguel Meza. One deputy was struck by the car but was not seriously hurt, Meza said.

The sedan continued in reverse, ramming a black and white patrol car parked behind it, Meza said. The suspects fled in the sedan, crashing into a wall before the car became disabled in the middle of the intersection of Telegraph Road and Armsdale Avenue, Meza added.

A female passenger was detained at the scene while two male suspects fled on foot before being captured nearby.

The woman, described as Hispanic and in her 20s, sustained gunshot wounds to her upper body, Meza said. She was taken to a hospital, where she was treated and released.

A 20-year-old male suspect, believed to be the driver, was shot in a leg and taken to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, according to Meza.

The third occupant, described by deputies as a 21-year-old Hispanic male wanted for auto theft, was taken into custody. He was not injured in the shooting and Meza said a loaded handgun was recovered from him.

The injured deputy also was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was treated and released, according to Meza.
