NORWALK, Calif. (KNX) — An assault suspect who engaged in a shootout with deputies Thursday night in Norwalk holed up in an unknown family home to evade arrest before he was captured and taken to a hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the suspect was in stable condition Friday morning.

Authorities also noted that after the shootout, investigators found a man described as a “victim” dead in the area, but it wasn’t immediately clear if he was a victim of the suspect, or a separate crime. The only information available about the man was that he “sustained trauma to the upper torso,” according to Deputy Miguel Meza.

The sheriff’s department was still investigating the deputy-involved shooting, which happened around 7 p.m. Thursday in the 12100 block of Foster Road in Norwalk.

Deputies assigned to the sheriff’s Apprehension Team were actively searching for a man suspected of committing a recent assault with a firearm and an attempted carjacking in the city, according to Meza.

Deputies found the man walking in the area and attempted to detain him when the suspect pulled out a handgun, prompting one deputy to fire on him, Meza said.

The suspect attempted to flee on foot when another deputy “engaged him,” and a second deputy-involved shooting occurred, Meza added.

The suspect continued to flee, still armed with a handgun as he entered the front yard of a residence. A third deputy attempted to detain the man, which is when another deputy-involved shooting occurred, according to Meza.

Despite being wounded by gunfire, authorities said the suspect made his way into the home, which forced the residents inside to flee immediately.

The residents were removed from the area and the home was surrounded by deputies, who requested a SWAT team to respond.

“After utilizing department resources, special enforcement deputies entered the location and arrested the suspect,” Meza said.

Deputies found the suspect sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. He was treated at the scene and taken to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, according to Meza.

During a check of the surrounding yard of the location, deputies located a 67-year-old Hispanic man lying on the ground unresponsive, Meza said. Paramedics were summoned to the location and determined the victim sustained trauma to the upper body, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

No deputies were injured in the incident.
