LOS ANGELES (KNX) — At least 34 additional mosquito samples in the Los Angeles area tested positive for West Nile virus, the Greater L.A. County Vector Control District announced Monday.
The additional samples bring the year's total number of positive samples within the district's service area to 110.
The new findings also marked the first detection of the virus this year in La Mirada, Pacoima, Pico Rivera, Studio City, Valley Glen, and Valley Village.
The bites of infected mosquitoes cause West Nile Virus. It transmits through mosquitoes that feed on infected birds. Dead bird reports are one way of helping experts, who say warm temperatures can increase virus activity, track the potential spread. West Nile is the most common mosquito-borne virus in the region and can make people sick or even cause death.
So far, the California Department of Public Health reports 18 cases statewide in 10 counties.
