AZUSA, Calif. (CNS) — A roughly 110-acre brush fire burning near San Gabriel Dam in the Angeles National Forest was 35% contained Wedensday.

The Gulch Fire was reported late Monday morning near Mile Marker 21 along San Gabriel Canyon Road, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Angeles National Forest officials.

As of early Wednesday morning, ANF officials estimated the fire had grown to 110 acres and was 35% contained.

"The fire ... is burning upslope west and northwest," an ANF statement revealed Tuesday. "Warm and dry conditions can be expected across the incident today with gusts pushing the fire northwest. The Angeles National Forest is aggressively working to contain the Gulch Fire with 179 firefighters diligently working through the day and night alongside air support."

Meanwhile, the East Fire, reported Thursday in the general area, was listed at 93% contained and about 150 acres.

"Due to the Gulch Fire and East Fire, there is no access to San Gabriel Canyon at this time," the ANF reported. "The fire danger level remains at 'Very High,' which allows for campfires and BBQs only in designated recreation sites -- campgrounds and picnic areas."

Investigators don't yet know what caused either fire. Power lines in the area could be at risk, but the fires had not caused any concerns for buildings in the area.

Highway 39 and San Gabriel Canyon Road, north of Azusa, closed as firefighters battled the flames.

Caltrans warned State Route 39 could shut down from the San Gabriel River Bridge to Crystal Lake Road through Labor Day weekend.
