A three-year-old child has tragically died after sustaining a gunshot wound on an Oakland freeway on Saturday, a victim of bullets authorities believe was meant for someone else.
The shooting on I-880 in Oakland happened at about 2:10 p.m., California Highway Patrol officials said. Victims of the shooting – traveling southbound on I-880 near Filbert St. in a white Lexus sedan – told officers their vehicle "was suddenly struck by gunfire," injuring the toddler.

The young child was rushed to Oakland Children's Hospital, where they later died. Authorities did not specify whether the victim was a boy or girl, however KPIX reported the victim was a boy.
CHP and Oakland police responded to the scene.
All lanes of the I-880 were closed in both directions for a time, but later reopened.
The suspect was reportedly driving a dark Chrysler 300. They fled on southbound I-880 from 7th St. "Evidence collected on the northbound side of the freeway may indicate the victims were not targeted and the child passenger was struck by a stray bullet," officials said in a news release.
Varying reports said the child is 23 months old.
Investigators are asking for the public's help in identifying suspects.
