Officers responded to the 4000 block of Berryman Avenue at around 5:50 a.m. to a report regarding a physical altercation, according to the Culver City Police Department.

A preliminary investigation led detectives to discover that the fight stemmed from a robbery in progress, in which a vehicle owner attempted to confront two men allegedly working collaboratively to steal his catalytic converter.

The victim grabbed one of the suspects to prevent the man from escaping before being punched in the head and struck with a metal pipe by the second suspect, police said. The victim declined to be taken to a hospital for his injuries.

Detectives described one of the suspects as a 5-feet-9-inch man weighing 170 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black shirt and black pants. The second suspect was described as 5-feet-10 inches and weighing 175 pounds. He was last seen wearing a gray sweater.

The two suspects were presumed to be in a dark-colored Chevy Camaro when they fled the scene, police said.

Anyone with information regarding the alleged theft was urged to contact Culver City Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Edward Baskaron at 310-253-6316 or the watch commander at 310-253-6202.
