KNX Hero: Cleaning up California one bucket at a time

In 2019, former KNX Hero Edgar McGregor began his mission to clean up California. Four years later, he's still at it! KNX News checked in with Edgar as he nears 1,500 days of picking up what others leave behind.

We first met Edgar in 2021 as our KNX Hero of the Week, two years into his passion project of cleaning up California parks, one bucket at a time.

He told KNX Hero host Heather Jordan, "When I first started my clean-up mission, I was just visiting the day after a rainstorm to see how high the creek had gotten, and I saw the trash. I went back the next week to clean up, and the rest is history."

For more than four years now, the young climate activist has rarely missed a day, filling up buckets with junk from California creeks and canyons.

He continued his mission while attending San Jose State University over the last two years, but he's back home in SoCal picking up everything from diapers to doggy bags and anything else hikers leave on the trail.

Though he admits it can sometimes be frustrating, Edgar said, "I get exercise, I get to learn about my local areas, and I feel like I'm part of a community, and so, it's not a burden on my part at all."

Edgar plans to keep it up for as long as the trash reappears, and his commitment to keeping California clean makes him an exemplary KNX Hero alum.
