LOS ANGELES (KNX) - In an exclusive interview with KNX News, Mayor Karen Bass said she’s committed to being more transparent about spending and the number of people housed by her signature homelessness program, Inside Safe.
The pledge comes a day after the Los Angeles City Council voted to approve an additional $250 million for Inside Safe, which will be dispersed in $50 million increments while the council monitors the program’s progress.
Councilmember Bob Blumenfield, the chair of the budget committee, was concerned about the lack of oversight of Inside Safe, which has been criticized as “secretive” and insufficient by program participants.
Rather than giving the mayor $250 million up front, the budget committee countered with what Blumenfield called an “auto refill concept,” allowing City Council to pause or cancel funding if they have concerns.
Bass told KNX’s Craig Fiegener that the arrangement is fine with her.
“I have no problem doing it that way, and I have no problem being transparent and accountable to the council,” she said.
Bass said she suggested a twice-monthly report on where the Inside Safe money is going, along with a report on how many people have been housed through the program.
Inside Safe has moved roughly 1200 people indoors since its launch nearly six months ago. Bass previously promised to house 17,000 people by December.
