LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Changes are coming to Los Angeles Unified School District in the spring semester, particularly with the district’s COVID-19 rules.
The school district announced the upcoming changes in the superintendent’s report that was presented during a board meeting on Tuesday.
One of the biggest changes is the weekly COVID-19 testing of students and staff members. Prior to the fall semester, it was announced that all staff and students would participate in weekly COVID-19 testing; however, in the spring semester only unvaccinated students will participate in weekly COVID-19 testing. The first test will happen during the first week of school
Students ages 5 and to 11 will be able to get the COVID-19 vaccine at school sites; however, officials say it will not be required at this time.
Staffers and students 18 years and older can also get their COVID-19 booster shot at school locations, but school officials are not making booster shots a requirement at this time. Booster shots for employees can be scheduled through their Daily Pass accounts.
In addition, school officials disclosed that baseline testing would not be required to complete before the new semester and that instead it will take place during the first week of classes.
Unvaccinated students will be qualified for “modified quarantine”. Modified quarantine, according to the L.A. County Department of Public Health, allows kids to do in-person instruction during regular school hours “while under Heath Officer Quarantine orders.”
School district officials also said outdoor masking is only required in schools where less than 85% of students are fully vaccinated. Indoor masking protocols will not change.
Officials said the spring semester rules are subject to change per the LACDPH guidelines.
The spring semester will start Jan. 11.
