4th of July celebrations come with an uptick in 911 calls across Southern California. One of those calls was for a fireworks accident in South L.A. where a man lost part of his hand.

LISTEN:

Firefighter Nicholas Pringe told KNX News reporter Pete Demetriou the incident occurred in the Adams-Normandie area of Los Angeles.

Pringe said, "We did see a 22-year-old male who had severe damage to the hand, vascular damage, and burns to the body because of a firework that exploded too close to his body."

Firefighters were also busy at a South L.A. home where people evacuated as the roof caught fire. Officials believe illegal fireworks were also to blame for the blaze but are still investigating.

An official analysis of calls L.A police and fire units received on the 4th
is still being totaled, but initial reports say the number is more than they get over several days in the city.

Fire officials are concerned that although the 4th of July is over, there are still large numbers of illegal fireworks out there, and they are urging people to turn them in rather than set them off.
