Man charged with murder in deadly Griffith Park hit-and-run

LOS ANGELES (KNX) – Murder charges were filed against a man who hit and killed a cyclist in Griffith Park Saturday.

Jairo Martínez , 37, is facing one felony count each of murder and hit-and-run driving resulting in death to another person, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said.

He’s also facing one misdemeanor count of driving with a suspended or revoked license due to a prior DUI conviction.

On Saturday, 77-year-old Andrew Jelmert biking for AIDS/LifeCycle’s SoCal Day when he was struck by Martínez. Jelmert died after suffering blunt force trauma.

Martínez attempted to run from the scene but was captured and arresred.

My heart goes out to everyone who grieves for the senseless loss of cyclist Andrew Jelmert," District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement.

"Drunken drivers threaten the safety of us all. They must be held accountable and their victims given the trauma-informed services they will need to become survivors."
