BRENTWOOD, LOS ANGELES (KNX) — A mountain lion was struck and killed early Thursday morning on the 405 Freeway in the Brentwood area.

Just before 1 a.m., California Highway Patrol said it received reports of an animal that was lying on the southbound 405 Freeway south of Getty Center Drive exit.

The 495 was temporarily closed as officials removed the animal. The freeways opened around 1:15 a.m., according to City News Service.

It is unclear if the animal was wearing a collar.  Ana Cholo, who serves as the spokesperson for the National Park Service, said the lion was not P-22, the infamous mountain lion who has a GPS radio collar.

“P-22 lives in Griffith Park and this is pretty far away,” she told the Los Angeles Times. “Not to say that it’s impossible, but no, it’s not P-22.”

The death comes one day before the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing’s groundbreaking ceremony. The urban crossing will go over the 101 Freeway in Liberty Canyon to help animals roam around freely without impact highway traffic.
