LOS ANGELES (KNX) — The Los Angeles Police Department is being sued in connection with claims by a woman who says she was wrongfully arrested and jailed for almost two weeks.
Plaintiff Bethany Farber alleged she was arrested at L.A. International Airport last April when officers believed she was a different woman with the same name.
Farber was headed to Mexico to see her brother and goddaughter, but instead was detained by Transportation Security Administration officers due to an arrest warrant out for the other Bethany Farber in Texas.
“Immediately, all I could think was I’ve never been to Texas,” Farber told KTLA.
Farber said she was jailed for 13 days on a no-bail warrant. Jail records confirmed her release on April 28, 2021.
While she was locked up, Farber's grandmother suffered a stroke. The family attributed the incident to stress brought on by her granddaughter's wrongful arrest. She died a few days later.
Farber's attorney, Rodney Diggs, said she planned to file the suit against the department on Tuesday.
“All this is done because LAPD failed to check the driver’s license, the birth date, the social security [number], even the booking photo of the other Bethany Farber. You can see there’s no relation. They look nothing alike,” Diggs said.
A spokesperson for the LAPD declined to comment on pending litigation.
