With recent reports suggesting that President Joe Biden will soon announce his reelection campaign, a new poll has found Americans are not feeling enthusiastic about the potential 2020 rematch in 2024 with former President Donald Trump.
LISTEN:
The Yahoo News/YouGov poll, conducted before the reports about Biden were released, has found that 38% of respondents reported feeling “exhaustion” about the potential rematch, compared to 29% who felt “fear” and 23% who noted “sadness and fear.”
The number of respondents to report positive feelings about round two between Trump and Biden was far fewer. The poll found only 23% reported feeling “hope,” while 8% felt “pride,” and 7% felt “gratitude.”
Still, there is a chance that Biden and Trump don’t face off in 2024, as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis could still win the Republican nomination, representing the party in the presidential election, despite Trump’s current lead over him.
Another Yahoo News/YouGov poll, released last week, found that the extra support Trump gained following his indictment at the end of March has since dwindled, with DeSantis again gaining steam but still remaining behind the former president.
Much is still up in the air with the former president as he continues to have legal troubles in Manhattan, where he faces 34 felony counts regarding falsifying business records.
As for Biden, the poll found that only 27% of respondents thought he should run for reelection. When it comes to his party, the number isn’t much better, as only 43% of Democrats said they think he should be the party’s nominee.
Still, the poll asked who respondents would support if Biden and Trump were on the ballot, whether they like it or not, and the current president led the former, 46% to 42%.
The poll was conducted from April 14 to 17 and included responses from 1,530 adults. There is a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.
