More than 80% of Democrats said they would vote for President Joe Biden, 80, if he was selected as the party’s candidate in the 2024 presidential election, according to poll results released Friday.

The AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll results found that 41% of Democrats would “definitely support” the current president and 40% would “probably” support him, with just 19% saying they would not. However, Biden would first have to become the candidate.

According to the poll results, “most adults do not want President Biden to run for a second term,” or nearly three out of four adult Americans. While less than half (47%) of Democrats said they would want to see him run again, that number is up significantly since January, when it was just 37%.

Despite former President Donald Trump’s recent legal troubles, 54% of Republicans would like to see him run for reelection. Overall, 70% of the public would not like to see him run. He announced his candidacy in November.

Although a larger percentage of Republicans would like to see Trump, 76, run than Democrats who would like to see Biden run, 29% of Republicans said they would not support the “MAGA” leader if he was the party’s candidate. Still, most of the party would support him, with 49% who said they definitely would vote for Trump and 22% who said they would probably support him.

Other poll results released this week by Yahoo News/YouGov found that Trump’s lead over one of his major rumored GOP opponents, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, had now fallen by 10 points over the last two weeks. On the Democratic side, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has filed to run for president in 2024.

In addition to a spike in Democrats interested in seeing Biden run again, the AP-NORC poll showed that 42% of the public now approve of the job the president is doing. That figure is up from 38% last month.

“His support among Democrats remains strong,” said AP-NORC, which conducted the poll from April 13 to April 17. Indeed, even though “only 30% of adults describe the national economy as good,” even that figure is up 5% compared to a March poll.
